Youlection

Privacy

The short version

Youlection never asks who you are. There are no accounts, no names, no email addresses and no passwords. We do not track you across other websites, and we run no advertising. One measurement tool does run here — Cloudflare's privacy-focused analytics, which counts page views so the site's operator can tell whether anyone is visiting. It is described below.

To stop one person voting fifty times, the site keeps two scrambled codes: one derived from a random ID your browser stores, and one derived from your network address. Neither can be turned back into you, and neither is shared with anyone.

What the site keeps

A random device ID. The first time you open Youlection, your browser generates a random identifier and saves it in its own local storage. It is not a cookie, it is not sent to any other website, and it contains nothing about you — it is a random string. The site uses it so that one browser gets one vote per poll, and so the daily limit on creating polls can be applied.

A one-way code derived from your network. Every website you visit sees your IP address; that is how the internet delivers pages. Youlection does not store yours. Instead the server combines it with a secret key to produce an irreversible code, stores only that code, and discards the address. The code cannot be reversed into an IP address by anyone who obtains the database. For IPv6 connections only the first half of the address is used before this happens.

What you type. The question and candidate names you enter when you create a poll, which choice was picked on each ballot, and the time each of these happened. Public polls are visible to everyone. Private polls are left off the public list and are only reachable by someone who has the link.

Reports. If you report a poll, the site records which poll, the reason you selected, and the same two scrambled codes, so that the same person cannot report the same poll repeatedly.

What the site does not keep

Other companies involved

Cloudflare serves the website and runs the "are you a person" check that appears when you create a poll or cast a ballot. As the host, Cloudflare sees your IP address, as it would for any website.

Cloudflare Web Analytics runs a small script on each page that counts page views and visitors, using performance timings the browser already exposes. Cloudflare states that it "does not collect or use your visitors' personal data". It exists so the operator can see whether anyone is visiting; it is not connected to your ballots, and no one here can tell from it who you are. Cloudflare's own documentation for it is here.

Supabase hosts the database where polls, ballots and the scrambled codes are stored.

Anthropic receives the text of a poll — the question and the candidate names, nothing else — so it can be screened automatically for content that breaks the rules below. No identifiers of any kind are sent with it, and ballots are never sent.

Nothing is sold to anybody, and nothing is handed to advertisers or data brokers. Information would only be disclosed further if the law required it.

How long things are kept

The log used to enforce the daily limit on creating polls is deleted automatically after 7 days. The moderation record of what was held or removed is deleted automatically after 180 days.

Polls and the ballots cast on them are kept for as long as the poll exists, so that results stay viewable. A ballot is only ever linked to a scrambled code, never to a person.

What you can do

Clearing your browser's site data for youlection.com removes the random device ID. Your browser will generate a new one, which means the site will no longer recognise ballots you cast previously — and, as a consequence, it may let you vote again on a poll you already voted on.

Because nothing here is tied to an identity, there is no account to download or delete. If you want a poll you created taken down, get in touch with the link to it and it will be removed.

Children

Youlection is not intended for children under 13, and is not directed at them. No one is knowingly permitted to use it under that age.
